Many people think that it is very difficult to train a deaf dog and also think that it is quiet impossible to live with them.
Seemingly their thought is right because how will they live with them who don’t hear! But actually their thought is wrong because it is possible to give them life like the hearing dogs lead by giving proper training.
But now I know that what you are thinking about and the thinking is how you will train them because they don’t hear. Don’t worry at all. There are many ways to train a deaf dog. Let’s see what the techniques are.
What Causes Deafness in Dogs
Basically deafness means to lose the ability of hearing. Some born deaf and some deaf suddenly attacked by some diseases. There are many diseases related to this deafness problem. Some of these are given below.
> Drug toxicity which actually occurs by directly applying any type of chemicals in the dog’s ear.
> General anesthesia causes deafness from many unknown causes.
> Noise trauma which actually occurs from unlimited loudness.
> Infection of the middle ear and inner ear can produce permanent deafness which is actually called otitis.
> Presbycusis which is actually an age related deafness.
Are Deaf Dogs more Aggressive
People think that deaf dogs are more likely to bite than the hearing dog’s. But surely there is particularly a reason of his aggression.
Since they cannot hear and they don’t know to talk, we will have to take measures based on the cause of his aggression. In fact their behavior is as normal as the hearing dogs.
Without any reason they don’t become aggressive. So there is no worry because you can easily train them as the same way you train a hearing dog.
How to Get Their Attention
To train a deaf dog first you need to get his attention to your training session. You need to technically set up his mind. Since they don’t hear it’ll be a very hard challenge for you to get his attention because here you cannot use verbal command.
You have to use eye contact instead of sounds. But now you are thinking what you will do when he will not in front of you.
For this situation you can use a remote control technology which is known as vibrating collar for him to realize him some commands such as ‘come’ or ‘look at me’.
And when he comes to you reward him with treat. Rewarding is the best way to control him.
Use Hands Signal or Sign Instead of Sounds
After training a deaf dog the eye contact system use hands sign to make him realization of your words. And remember all the training session should be mini sessions but do them frequently.
Create different types of signal with your fingers which seems easy for you to make him understandable. Make different types of letter signs with fingers and use one by one to command different things.
When you will show him these signs also say it with your mouth so that beside the hands sign he can understand the command easily by looking at your mouth.
And every time when you will listen to your command show him the universal ‘thumbs-up’ sign for telling him that he is a good boy.
How You do Make him Realize When You Get Hurts
When you will play with him firstly train him to be in gentle in playing by rubbing on hand over the other of your hand.
If he continues to play gently then give him a big smile and the thumbs up sign so that he can understand that you are praising him. In the mid of playing then create a situation that he bites you under excitement.
Then say ‘No no’ making a sad expression on your face. Then again rub your hand to say him to be gentle in playing. You have to walk away from him for sometimes.
And again join him in playing after the break so that he can clearly understand the reason of your distance. Then if he continues the playing gently praise him and reward him. Repeating this session every day you can easily train a deaf dog.
Should You Let Your Deaf Dog Off Leash
If you let your deaf dog off leash then when you will call him how he will know about it? Though you are using the vibrating collar for him but if he doesn’t see you how he will know which way he has to go.
For this you have to train him auto-check-in so that he can find you himself. This will create automatically by preying animals because there lays a fascinating scent in the body of every animals even humans. So by smelling the scent he can easily find the way where you will stay.
By training this behavior you can stay your deaf dog off leash. Beside these you can also teach him to come by hands signal.
And it’s easy to teach him to come in night by using a flashlight. Because it is hard to train them in the day light if his focus on something else.
How to Keep Your Deaf Dog Safe
The deaf dog owners should obviously take some safety measures towards them because they can’t hear. It is the best idea to keep him on leash every time to avoid accidents.
But you need to also off leash him sometime to give him the happiness of freedom. You can put a loud bell on his neck so that you can easily track him by hearing his bell’s sound.
You can also put a tag with his bell where will be written ‘Deaf’. This is how you can keep safe your deaf dog.
Teaching manners to a dog is not as easy as some people think if you don’t learn the training session properly. And it will be a challenge when you are going to train a deaf dog.
But patient is the most important thing because everything is not going to change overnight.
You have to train him properly and wait for the right time when he will learn everything you teach.
